The Falcons have played their home matches on a large number
of pitches around South London so it is difficult to say where
their home really is.
The original plan was for the team to be based in Merton but
unfortunately the pitches in Merton that were made available
by Merton Council often turned out to be unplayable. This
led to a big backlog of fixtures that could only be cured
with the use of the Astroturf at Crystal Palace.
Few if any members of the team would say that they are fond
of Crystal Palace as a venue. The state of Mark
Robertson's knees bears testament to the rough time which
they have had when they have played there. Nonetheless if
anywhere can be called the home of the Falcons it is Crystal
Palace because the team have played there more times than
anywhere else in their history.
In their second season, in order to have a home that everyone
was fond of, the Falcons decided that they wanted to be based
at Wandsworth Common, scene of the all too infrequent team
practice sessions. This seemed a logical choice because Wandsworth
Common has two advantages over Crystal Palace, the pitches
there are grass ones, not Astroturf, and Wandsworth Common
is within easy walking distance of the Falcon pub at Clapham
Junction which gives the team its name.
Despite this popular choice, booking problems and our lovely
weather have meant that Wandsworth Common has still got some
way to go before it deposes Crystal Palace from its extremely
unpopular status as the real home of the Falcons. A large
number of the team will have their fingers crossed that this
will change during the current season.
